Observing and interacting with Professional

During the last two weeks, I have interacted with several people about the area for my research paper. The area I will be doing research on is special needs/disability. This is an interesting area because I need to learn more about it so I can help all children. I will be focusing on the appropriate assessments, inclusion, and resources for parents. These topic will help enlighten the parents, children, and teachers about special needs/disabilities.

I learned a lot from talking to two teachers and a parent that work with special needs children in Chicago Public Schools. The two teachers together have three children that receives services for speech. The majority of the children the parent work with also have speech problems. I found this to be very interested and mind blowing. This could change the direction of the topics for my research paper.

Another thing that I learned, was about hospitals providing the services for children. I always thought that the children need to go to their home school to receive the services. I was informed that hospitals can give the children the services and also return to school. I always saw children coming to the centers after an half of day at public school on a school bus. I guess we do learn something new everyday because I did.

  1. Sandra from what I have seen in my experiences with preschool age children the most common IEP needs in this age group have been speech and behavioral concerns.
I find the hospital services interesting. I thought most schools has their support staff and therapists in house or though agencies who came to the school. In my area there is a special school for children with behavior concerns call PEP (Positive Education Program). There is also a special school for children with autism that is run by the Cleveland Clinic.

  2. I am interested in hearing more about the area that you are in and the services offered through the hospital. This is something I have never heard of. I am doing my research similuar to yours. In my area we are like Jennifer's responce we have therapists who come in and work with the children. We also have resources through agencies in our local area.

  3. I like the topic you have chosen for your research paper and it does sound interesting. I watch a program on television talking about children with special needs and how they are misdiagnosed all the time. There are children who have ADHD and they are constantly put on medication quickly, but found out later they do have it. There were children who had ADHD, but were not treated for it. You are right children need our help to make sure they get the right resources and services. I did not know hospital provided services for children and then bring them back to center like schools does. I am interested in finding out about those services so I can share them with my parents/families with a child who has special needs.

  4. Sandra you have chose a great topic to research. When I was a parent volunteer in my son's school, they placed me in the EMH classroom which were the children who had developmental delays, speech, etc... At the time their inclusion classes only consisted of gym, art, and library. I stated to the teacher these are not inclusion classes. Why are the kids not going to the regular general education classes? The teacher couldn't answer me, it seemed like they had something to hide. But to make a long story short I fought for those children rights to be treated fairly and equally. A lot of parents with children with disabilities really don't know their rights and they are not being told what they are. I am very interested to see what approach you take with your research paper. This is going to be a very good research paper.

  5. I am not sure if you are interested, but I may be able to help you with your research. I have been teaching preschool for 5 years now and have a number of students with disabilities, ranging from autism, Down's syndrome, mental health disorders, deafness, and more. I currently have 11 students with documented disabilities in my class. I am also a parent of a child with a speech delay and we have the option to recieve servies through many different agencies. If you are interested in my help, please let me know. We can arrange to talk on the phone (I do not live in the chicago area).
